Hello, fellow writer.

For years, I wrote about nothing but grief.

And, then, in a workshop, I tried to write something else — only to be told that grief was truer and more “authentic” than happiness. As a veteran teacher of writing, this not only felt wrong, but dangerous.

I rebelled.

I became determined to approach my students’ work with the same generosity of spirit that I want my own readers to approach mine. It is in this spirit that I center my writing services and that I founded the Rehoboth Beach Writers Guild in 2004.

Happiness deserves our attention, too.

There are numerous — and important — difficult subjects to explore, but let’s not eschew happiness. It requires the same scrutiny, intelligence, beauty, and care with which we approach writing about grief. There is much to be wrestled with in all of these subjects, and so so much to learn.

Welcome to a safe space for writers to grow.

“I am so grateful for the assignments in fiction tutorial. My book happened because of this class.

I needed to be more serious with my writing, I needed deadlines, and I needed thoughtful prompts to keep me going. Maribeth provided all of this, which brought about a lot of the chapters of my first book, A Little Hope. In addition to the prompts, it was Maribeth's guidance that made me consider character and plot so deeply.”

  • Ethan Joella, author of A Little Hope, A Read-with-Jenna Bonus Pick (Today Show). He was a member of the 2016 class “Assignments in Fiction.”
